THE WEEK(and a half) BEFORE CONTEST
(Texas U.I.L Region 10 Marching Contest 1994)
(after C.C. Moore)
'Twas the week before Contest, and down from the skies,
Came sheets of hard rain, which made flood waters rise!
No practice on Monday, the schools closed at one,
On Tuesday they stayed closed, no sign of the sun.
Again closed on Wednesday, the water's still high,
But those clouds have parted, there's blue in the sky!
They called for a practice on that day by phone,
Not all could be reached, and flood still filled some homes,
The Region was by rising water all split,
I-10 and Route 90 were covered by it.
The Contest was postponed until next Wednesday,
In hopes that the floods would by then drain away.
On Thursday school reopened in weather fine,
The Band and the Stars worked to make up lost time,
While thick clouds of black foul smoke rose in the skies,
From river borne burning oil spills of huge size.
Then Friday the practice was cut short by rain,
And Stallworth was mud soaked, can't march at the game.
The Saturday practice fixed much that was wrong,
While band mothers re-hemmed some pants that were long.
On Monday the practice went well in most ways,
And Mr. Stone scouted some other 5-A's.
Last practice on Tuesday, not Stallworth, a shame,
That big field was used for a make-up ball game.
The did all they could do, and hoped that all's well,
It was time to compete in the U.I.L.
